Scala natural (shibori) dyeing : April 12, 13 and 14

WORKSHOP : Best mordanting and best classic natural dyes. On 5 different natural fabrics. Overdyeing and shibori. Practical indigo dyeing, for which you can bring extra material. Dyes : Madder, Weld, Genista, (Chlorofyl), Cochineal, Indigo(woad), and choosing from Campechewood, cutch, oakwood extract and walnut. Mordants are aluminium salts and gallnuts for cellulose fibre. Some dyes can be used without mordant, best on wool.

On premordanted Fabrics : cotton, linen, hemp, silk and wool we are going to dye with extracts of madder, cochineal, indigo, genista, reseda, walnut, cutch (and campeche wood). There are alternative mordants and we will dye on 14 different fabric/mordant combinations. The materials used for the mordanting (preparing for natural dyeing) are aluminium salts and gallnuts for the plant fibres. Some mordants are done cold.

We will also make combinations of some of the dyes. For those who want to with shibori using plastic and cord. Or your own favorite method of tiedye. 

We will have the time to learn in depth and be given handouts about the best way of mordanting. Both for the best lightfastness results and for most practical dyeing. The idea is that you find what you like to do when you are at home to practice dyeing.

We will learn about many more dyes. Leentje shows examples from her big archive that she build up.

The workshop will take place in Amsterdam at Tinctoria, max 7 participants and minimum 4.
